Established in Byron Bay, northern NSW during March 1990 John Burgess' Architectural practice has been involved in a variety of project types from single dwelling and multi-unit residential and commercial work through to urban planning. In Byron Bay the practice was involved in some landmark developments and renovations including; the Award winning Rae's on Wategoes, the historic Orient Hotel and numerous commercial projects and beach houses. One residential development at Suffolk Park was recognized by the Australian Financial Review as the NSW representative for their review of significant Australian Beach-houses. From October 1995 untill November 2008 a Sydney branch JOHNBURGESSARCHITECTS was established in Potts Point. The practice is once again based in Byron Bay with projects predominanly being high end residentail works. We also specialise in interior design and lighting design. We have received both State and International Lighting Awards for commercial interiors. John Burgess holds several Patents and has products under license in the Australian and International market. 

We appreciate the invaluable resource of historical and regional architecture but feel that today's buildings should reflect a combination of knowledge gleaned from the past melded with the technology and insight of the present. We are devoted to the pursuit of excellence in contemporary architecture and specialise in coastal designs that are sympathetic both to the natural and built environment. Special attention is given to ensuring the aesthetic, ecological and functional suitability of a development to its physical and cultural environment.
